The mentally-ill, homeless man who died days after getting into a violent altercation with Fullerton police officers a year ago was cleared of any wrongdoing.
Acting Fullerton Police Chief Dan Hughes told the Fullerton City Council Tuesday there is no evidence Kelly Thomas was doing anything wrong the night he was beaten by police.
Thomas’ father, Ron Thomas, stood before the council and thanked Hughes for clearing his son’s name.
“Fourteen months ago when all this information came out, Kelly was looked at as a criminal doing horrible things and possibly burglarizing," Thomas said. "Independent Investigator Michael Gennaco cleared that up in two different reports, but I had to hear it from the police department."
Two former officers have been charged in Thomas' death. Published reports say another, now ex-officer, involved in the struggle, Joe Wolfe, could also be charged in the case.
