The Rev. Robert Schuller has lost a bid to get more than $5 million from his former ministry, a bankrupt religious empire that included worldwide broadcasts and Southern California's Crystal Cathedral.

The Orange County Register says Schuller was awarded less than $616,000. His daughter and son-in-law got some $77,600.

A bankruptcy judge rejected most of the family's claims of copyright infringement and breach of contract.

Schuller and the others severed ties with the Crystal Cathedral Ministries, which sold its landmark Garden Grove temple to the Catholic church. They'll have to stand in line with other creditors to receive a chunk of an estimated $17 million available from the ministry.

Schuller's daughter, Carol Schuller Milner, calls the judgment a "travesty." She says she's unsure if it will be appealed.
