Footage from a security camera that shows much of the altercation between Fullerton police officers and Kelly Thomas at the Fullerton bus depot played during a preliminary hearing for the death of Thomas, on May 7, 2012 in Santa Ana.
UPDATE 10:18 a.m.: A judge continued a motion to dismiss hearing to January 18 for two ex-Fullerton police officers charged in connection with the beating death of a homeless, mentally-ill man.
The two former Fullerton police officers charged in the beating death of a 37-year-old Kelly Thomas appeared in court Friday as a judge considered a motion to dismiss the charges.
PREVIOUSLY: Manuel Ramos pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter in the death of Kelly Thomas. Jay Cicinelli also pleaded not guilty to charges of manslaughter and excessive force.
Thomas died following a violent confrontation with six officers who were responding to reports of car burglaries at the Fullerton Transportation Center in July 2011.
The two were ordered to stand trial in May. But defense attorneys say Ramos and Cicinelli did not violate any laws and Thomas should have obeyed officers’ commands.
The former police officers remain free on bail pending trial.
