Off-duty Costa Mesa policeman dies in car crash

An off-duty Costa Mesa police officer has died after his car smashed into a freeway support pillar Tuesday night.

The car hit the concrete column beneath State Route 55 in Costa Mesa at about 10:30 p.m..

The driver was the only person in the car. He was pronounced dead at a hospital. His name has not been shared with the public.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
