A man is hospitalized after being shot and thrown from a car on a busy downtown Los Angeles freeway, and police are searching for the gunman.

The Los Angeles Times says the victim, whose name has not been released, is hospitalized Sunday in critical condition.

Police say the man was tossed out of the car in the fast lane of Interstate 110 Saturday evening. Detectives don’t know if he was shot inside the car or somewhere else.

Officers shut down all southbound lanes by the 9th Street exit for two hours to investigate the crime scene, causing traffic to back up for miles.

Witnesses described the getaway vehicle as a burgundy or brown Camry with a blown-out rear window.

Police say the incident may be gang-related.
