Los Angeles County sheriff's authorities say a fight involving more than 60 inmates at the Twin Towers jail left four injured and forced a lockdown at the facility.

Sheriff's Department spokesman Steve Whitmore says a fight broke out along racial lines around noon Tuesday in a recreation area in Tower One.

The skirmish lasted about a minute before deputies regained control. The four injured inmates suffered cuts and bruises, and were transported to a hospital for treatment. Jail authorities have struggled for years to keep tensions between Latino and black inmates in check.

Los Angeles County runs the nation's largest jail system, with facilities housing about 19,000 inmates.
