Authorities say a man who was shot and killed after he stabbed to death a woman at a Fontana park and ride lot was a prison parolee.

The San Bernardino Sun reports that a California Highway Patrol officer killed 43-year-old David Mulder on Sunday evening after he charged officers with a knife in his hand.

Authorities were called to the Fontana lot to investigate a report that a man was attacking woman in a car. Authorities later found 49-year-old Elisa VanCleve of Rialto stabbed to death.

Authorities say Mulder had drug-related convictions and was released from state prison last September. The homeless man violated probation terms and was jailed again but was freed less than a week before the killing.
