Police in Long Beach fatally shot a suspect who allegedly pulled out a handgun while being chased by officers.

Sgt. David Marander tells City News Service that officers responded early Sunday to calls of a man with a gun in North Long Beach just north of the 91 Freeway.

After being confronted by officers the man took off running. At some point during the chase he brandished a weapon and officers opened fire.

Authorities say the man, who was not identified, was shot in the upper body. He later died at a hospital.

Investigators say a handgun was recovered at the scene.

As with all officer-involved shootings, the Los Angeles County district attorney's office will conduct an independent investigation of the incident.
