Have an enchanted Memorial Day weekend: 5 things to do in SoCal

1. Make like a mystic with fairy time at South Coast Botanic Garden

Enjoy the company of mythical creatures telling legendary tales Saturday in Palos Verdes. A Faery Hunt will host an interactive walk in the enchanted gardens of South Coast Botanic Garden. Get ready for a day of magical stories and glorious dancing and singing. Picnicking will be available on the lawn adjacent to the Amphitheater during the event hours, and kids — of course — are invited to dress in costume! 

When: Tours begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday and run every half hour until noon.

Price: $12 for adults and children

2. Get punny at Gallery 1988 

Hansky, the street artist who gained recognition for putting Tom Hanks’ face on copies of Banksy’s art, will show his work at Gallery 1988 this Friday through June. Expect humorous word play in "How the West was Pun," an exhibit that mixes puns with graphic art. Celebs like Jessica Alba, Samuel L. Jackson and Jonah Hill have been known to drop by Gallery 1988, which features the latest in pop-culture themed artwork. 

When: Show runs from Friday through June 15; Opening reception: 7 to 10 p.m. Friday

3. Partake in crazy competition with rubber duck races at Kidspace 

Rubber duckies aren't just for bath time fun. Kidspace will host a series of races throughout the weekend.  You can purchase a duck from its Busy Bee Learning Store (while supplies last) or bring your own; then decorate the toy and race it down the Interpretive Arroyo in the Kidspace Gardens. 

When: Races will run hourly from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday through Monday

Where: Kidspace Children's Museum480 N Arroyo Blvd., Pasadena, CA 91103

Price: The races are free with admission, and you can bring your own duck or purchase one from the Busy Bee Learning Store (while supplies last).

4. Get baked at the HempCon 

Yes, it's exactly what it sounds like. Billed as America's "largest medical marijuana show" and "largest hemp convention," this three-day expo at the Convention Center includes live performances and booths of all kinds. There will also be legal services and doctors' evaluations on hand. —Hayley Fox 

When: Begins at 3 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

5. Draw on the Moon (in the magical mountains of Malibu) 

Campout on private land in Malibu at Drawing on the Moon, a four-day electronic music festival filled with more than 120 musical acts — plus art installations, dance performances and film. Expect psychedelic performances by acts including DJ Ty Goodwin and Love in the Circus. A percentage of the festival's proceeds will go to organizations like Soaring Heights a Children's Arts Program and ELSA. There will be activities like face painting for children, according to its Facebook page. 

When: 5 p.m. Friday through 5 p.m. Monday

Where: Parking and shuttle location, 3027 Townsgate Rd., Westlake Village, CA 91361 

Price: 2-day pass, $70; 3-day pass, $90, 4-day pass $110
