The DMV now says the teenage driver of a car that crashed in Newport Beach, killing himself and four friends, was driving with an expired temporary license.

The state agency initially said 17-year-old Abdulrahman Alyahyan had no license of any kind when he lost control of his speeding Infiniti and slammed into a tree last month. The car was torn in half and burst into flames.

The Orange County Register says the DMV later launched a more complete review and found that the driver had a 90-day temporary provisional license — but it expired two weeks before the crash.
