Investigators at the scene of crash involving an Orange County Sheriff's deputy Monday June 17, 2013.

An Orange County Sheriff's deputy crashed into a light post while patrolling Mission Viejo early Monday morning.

At around 3 a.m., the deputy was ejected from his patrol car and suffered a head injury, according to a Sheriff's Department news release, before being transported to Mission Hospital in critical condition. Orange County Sheriff's Department Spokeswoman Gail Krause said later Monday morning that the deputy's condition had been upgraded to serious, but stable condition.

The Sheriff's Department is not releasing his name. Krause says the deputy is a 13-year veteran of the department. He's patrolled Mission Viejo since 2008.
