Redlands Police arrested a 28-year-old high school teacher Monday evening, accused of having sex with a teenage boy who fathered a child with the teacher.

A Redlands high school teacher has been accused of having a student's baby. The baby was reportedly born about two weeks ago.

Redlands police commander Shawn Ryan says 28-year-old Laura Whitehurst was arrested at her apartment Monday for unlawful sex with a minor.
"Whitehurst is a teacher at Citrus Valley High School here in Redlands. The victim, a now 17-year-old, was 16 at the time of the assault and a student at the school."
Police say the teacher-student sexual relationship began last summer and continued for nearly a year.

Officials at Citrus Valley High contacted officers Monday after they got a tip from the student's mother.

The school issued a statement that said the teacher had been placed on leave after police were notified. A police investigation continues.

Whitehurst is out on bail but couldn’t immediately be reached for comment. A Redlands phone number for her has been disconnected.

A Southern California man also claims he had teenage sex with Whitehurst. Twenty-three-year-old Michael Cooper tells KABC-TV that he was a 17-year-old junior in Laura Whitehurst’s English class at Redlands High School when they began a sexual relationship in 2007. He says it lasted nearly a year.

The Redlands Daily Facts says a police report has been made and an investigator will try to verify the account.
