The Orange County Register has announced that it will start a new six-days-a-week newspaper in Long Beach, the Long Beach Register. The newspaper is scheduled to begin publication on Aug. 19.

O.C. Register publisher Aaron Kushner said in a story on the O.C. Register’s site that the new paper wasn’t about competing with the established Long Beach Press-Telegram.

The paper is set to launch with a 20 person staff, including former Press-Telegram publisher Ian Lamont as the paper’s publisher, as well as former Press-Telegram city editor Paul Eakins as the new paper’s editor.

According to the O.C. Register, the new paper will include at least 10 pages of local news and sports, plus at least six pages of news on local schools. The Saturday edition just includes the schools section.

The paper is set to be wrapped around the O.C. Register, and available at newsstands both by itself and combined with the O.C. Register.
