The Los Angeles County coroner will examine human remains found near a bike path in Montebello.
Sheriff's Lt. Dave Coleman tells the Los Angeles Times the remains were found Wednesday morning near the Rio Hondo bike path.
A coroner's official says age and gender had yet to be determined. Coroners officials told KPCC it could take weeks or months to determine the identity of a person when all they have are skeletal remains.
Montebello police are handling the investigation with help from the sheriff's department.
L.A. County Sheriff Lt. Dave Coleman did not say whether the agencies believe the remains, which were strewn out near the trail, are a result of a homicide.
“Obviously, finding remains in an area like that is suspicious in nature,” he told KTLA.
