L.A. County sheriffs officials are still trying to piece together the details of a shooting that left one man dead in South Pasadena.
L.A. County officer Rich Pena said an off-duty officer shot and killed a man in the area around Arroyo Park at around 1 am. Sunday. It's still not clear what the man was suspected of doing, he said.
"We still don't know how the confrontation came about," Pena said.
The suspect fled the location in a vehicle and crashed in to a parked car a short distance away.
Officer Pena said South Pasadena police took the man to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
City News Service reports that the officer, who worked for Cal State Los Angeles police, was injured in the incident, but it wasn't clear if he had been shot. Deputy Tony Moore told CNS that the officer "suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene by paramedics."
A handgun believed to be that of the man was recovered from the scene.
Pena said they are still trying to determine whether the man fired at the officers before he was shot.
