Labor Day DUI checkpoints

Police agencies throughout the Southland will be conducting numerous DUI checkpoints and patrols throughout this long Labor Day weekend. The increased police force is intended to curb instances of drunken driving. We have a list of checkpoints in Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside counties for you to check out.

5 Freeway reduced to 3 lanes

Is Labor Day weekend taking you to or from Los Angeles? Be mindful that the northbound I-5 in northern L.A. County will be reduced to three lanes starting 5 a.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Tuesday.

The closure begins two miles south of Vista Del Lago Road and stretches to an area two miles south of Smokey Bear Road.

The good news: all four southbound I-5 lanes will be open during the holiday weekend. The Frazier Mountain Park Road on-ramp, which has been closed, will also be open. The bad news: Caltrans says you should expect delays and traffic congestion, particularly on Friday between 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Monday from noon to 5 p.m.

120 Freeway closed near Yosemite due to wild fire

If you're planning on a Yosemite trip, keep in mind that, though the park is mostly open, portions of the 120 Freeway and surrounding roads in central California are closed due to the blazing Rim Fire. According to Caltrans and Yosemite National Park officials, the following routes and roads are closed:

  • State Route 120 remains closed to all inbound and outbound traffic from Yosemite National Park to Crane Flat Campground.
  • State Route 120 is closed 3.2 miles east of Groveland to 6 miles west of the Yosemite National Park Boundary.
  • State Route 120 from Pine Mountain Drive to Ferretti Road is closed.
  • Smith Station at Highway 120.
  • Cherry Lake at Highway 120.
  • State Route 120 from Ferretti Road (near Smith Station) to Buck Meadows is open only for local residents and business only — but is closed to the traveling public.
  •  Cherry Lake at Highway 120, Evergreen Road and Old Yosemite Road are closed.
  • Ferretti and Evergreen roads are closed.

Additionally, a portion of the Tioga Road, from Crane Flat to White Wolf, is temporarily closed to all traffic.  Caltrans says they anticipate the closure to last at least through Labor Day weekend.

Fires and tipsy drivers aren't the only threats to your weekend travels, though. Here's a look at this weekend's closures, detours and construction updates. Safe travels!
