The Anaheim City Council will vote Tuesday to enter new lease negotiations with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
The Anaheim City Council is scheduled to vote Tuesday to begin lease negotiations with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. A new lease proposal could allow the team to drop the mention of "Anaheim" in their lengthy (and controversial) name, which was changed in 2005, becoming simply the Los Angeles Angels.
Under their current lease, the Angels have the option to end their agreement to play at the city owned stadium in Anaheim beginning in October of 2016, so the City Council is getting a jump on the negotiations. Following the Tuesday vote, that window could be extended to 2019. According to the City's website, they don't have any reason to expect the Angels will leave, but since it's an option, officials want an agreement to head off any possible problems.
"Since Angel Stadium of Anaheim opened in 1966, Angels Baseball has been a valued community partner and we look forward to many more years to come. However, the team’s request to meet with the City to discuss terms of a lease extension means that this could become an option for the Angels depending on the outcome of the negotiations."
The Los Angeles Times reports that under a new proposed deal, the Angels would pay for a major renovation of Angel Stadium, which was last remodeled between 1996 and 1997, and the Angels owner would be granted the right to rent and develop land surrounding the stadium. According to a report from the City of Anaheim, the new lease may also relieve Anaheim of its $600,000 a year contribution to help maintain the stadium, transferring that responsibility to the Angels.
The staff report also outlines the importance of the Angels franchise to the City, noting that the the team brings $120 to $213 million to Anaheim each year and it is the city's "first professional sports franchise."
