Nick Pasquale, a wide receiver for UCLA and a former player for San Clemente High, was struck and killed by a passing car early Sunday morning.

Lt. Gary Strachan of the Orange County Sheriff's Department confirmed Pasquale was hit by a car as he was walking in the street near the corner of Camino de los Mares and Calle Nuevo in San Clemente. The Orange County Register reports the accident occurred around 1:30 a.m.

"I can tell you it was a tragic accident," Strachan said. "The driver called us, remained on scene and no one was arrested."

Pasquale died at the site of the accident, Strachan said. An investigation into Pasquale's death is ongoing, he said.

The San Clemente Times reports that police don't believe the driver had been drinking. The Bruins had a bye week; Bruins Nation says Pasquale was likely home with family and friends.

Pasquale had played a major role in San Clemente High's success in 2011, the SC Times reported:

Pasquale and his family have been mainstays in the San Clemente youth sports community and after graduating from San Clemente, Nick walked on to play for the UCLA football team. He was a key member of the 2011 San Clemente High CIF Pac-5 Division runner-up team.

His passing was being mourned by his UCLA teammates on Twitter

The definition of a true team player. Came to practice every day ready to work and give his all for his teammates. Miss you PACman
