Blue, an 8-month old pit bull, is shown Oct. 4, 2013 in a photo during a DACC veterinarian exam in Los Angeles. The medics found several pellets imbedded in the dog’s body and a seriously injured front paw. Although no arrests have been made, an investigation is under way. Department spokeswoman Marcia Mayeda says officers got a tip that the 8-month-old dog named Blue was being repeatedly beaten by its owner with a belt.

Blue was taken to the department's veterinarians for an exam. The medics found several pellets imbedded in the dog's body and a seriously injured front paw.

Although no arrests have been made, an investigation is under way. The dog's owner turned it over to the department. That way, when the dog heals, the county can find a home for Blue.

Mayeda says Blue is shy, gentle and would make a great companion pet.
