A 16-year-old Downey High School running back who collapsed during a football game this week in Lynwood died Saturday.

Dodi Soza died at Miller Children's Hospital in Long Beach, said hospital spokeswoman Richele Steele. The time of death and cause were not available.

Los Angeles County firefighters got a call Thursday afternoon from Lynwood High School and were told the boy was not breathing, authorities said.

Paramedics arrived within five minutes and took the boy to St. Francis Medical Center, authorities said. He was placed in the intensive care unit and later transferred to Miller Children's Hospital.

"He just collapsed and apparently he went into cardiac arrest," Mario Galvan, a friend and teammate told ABC7.

One student said Soza's collapse stunned those attending the game.

"Everybody just stopped and they all got into a group. They all starting crying and, I guess, praying," eyewitness Saul Limones told Channel 7.
