Monday is Veterans Day, which honors the service of all U.S. military veterans. It's also a federal holiday and that means most people are off work. There are a number of ways to commemorate and celebrate those who have served. We have a list of local events and Veterans Day freebies below. Share your plans in comments. 

 

1. Take a veteran to the Aquarium of the Pacific — for free 

Veterans — as well as active military personnel, police officers and firefighters — get in to the Aquarium of the Pacific for free Monday. 

When: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday 

Where: Aquarium of the Pacific| MAP

Price: Free with valid service ID 


2. Join the Veterans Day Celebration in Costa Mesa

Orange County labor unions present an activities-filled day that will include live music and entertainment, historic military vehicles, materials to make holiday cards and care packages for vets, free hot dogs and a veterans resource fair. 

When: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday 

Where: OC Fair Grounds | MAP

Price: Free


3. Attend Pasadena’s annual Veterans Day Ceremony

Pasadena’s annual Veterans Day Ceremony is hosted by Harold Martin, the PCC Veterans Club Advisor. Also in attendance will be veteran students from PCC, Mayor Bill Bogaard, L.A. Sheriff Lee Baca, Pasadena Police and Fire Department, and the local Marine Corps Reserves. Refreshments will follow the commemorative ceremony. 

When: 10 to 11 a.m. Monday

Where: Pasadena City Hall at Centennial Square | MAP

Price: Free


4. Join the Veterans Day Service in Redondo Beach 

The program, led by retired Marine Maj. Gen. Melvin Spiese, includes recognition of several former WWII prisoners of war, and musical performances by the Los Angeles Police Emerald Society Pipes and Drums, and the Redondo Union High School Wind Ensemble. A barbecue picnic sponsored by the Redondo Beach Elks Lodge #1378 will follow at 2 p.m. Expect a special appearance by the oldest living Rosie the Riveter as well. 

When: 1 p.m. Monday 

Where: Veterans Park | MAP

Price: Free for veterans, firefighters and police officers | $5 for everyone else 


5. Take advantage of free admission at Knott's Berry Farm 

Knott's Berry Farm pays tribute to U.S. veterans, retired and current military personnel with free admission during its veterans celebration, which runs through January 5, 2014. This offer is valid to all past and present armed forces personnel, plus one guest. Six additional tickets may be purchased at a discounted rate of $22 each until November 27 and for $27 from November 28 to January 5.

When: November 4, 2013 through January 5, 2014

Where: Knott's Berry Farm | MAP

Price: Free
