A research firm says Southern California home-buying saw a bump last month compared with September but continued to fall short of 2012 levels.

DataQuick said Tuesday that more than 20,000 houses and condos sold in Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego, Ventura, San Bernardino and Orange counties in October.

That's up 5.4 percent from September but down 4.4 percent from October 2012 and down 14.4 percent from the October average for the past 25 years.

The San Diego-based firm also says that for the fourth straight month, median home prices remained essentially the same in October at about $380,000. However, prices were more than 20 percent higher than during the same month last year.
