Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) announced Friday that AllenCo will suspend operations at its oil and gas pumping facility in the University Park neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Sen. Boxer first called for this action earlier this month when she learned that residents in the community — including children —were reporting health concerns from the chemical odors.

The senator said in a press release Friday that she's pleased that AllenCo has quickly responded to her request.

"People in the community, including children, have reported experiencing dizziness, headaches, respiratory ailments, and recurring nosebleeds," Boxer said in a press release Friday. "I commend AllenCo for taking responsible steps to ensure that local residents will not continue to suffer.”

Boxer visited the University Park neighborhood Nov. 8, and held a press conference with local residents where she called for suspension of operations.

The press conference was held directly across the street from the site, and at one point during Boxer's remarks, a chemical odor permeated the area.

"You can smell this smell as I stand here, and it is bad,” Boxer said.
