Los Angeles County firefighters have gained control of a fire in a gym at Roosevelt Middle School in Compton, according to wire service reports.
A spokesman for Compton Unified tells KPCC that the fire was isolated to the girls' gym.
Students and staff were evacuated to a nearby 99 Cent store. But the school district spokesman says it appeared many students had already left the campus because Wednesday was an early dismissal day.
Activities at the school have been cancelled for the rest of the day.

"The cause of the fire is still unclear at this time," Superintendent Darin Brawley said in a statement. He thanked the L.A. County Sheriff's Department, the Compton School Police, the L.A. County Fire Department and other local fire departments for their response.
