Fontana police say they are assisting the Department of Fish and Wildlife in the search for a mountain lion that attacked and killed a family pet in a North Fontana residential area early Wednesday.

The attack occurred at about 3:30 a.m. in the 4100 block of Fox Borough Drive. A resident heard his 100-pound German Shepherd in distress, and when he went out to the back yard to check, he saw a large mountain lion standing over the dog's dead body, according to a police statement.

Officers arrived later and shot at the mountain lion, scaring it into the canyon. Police said they consider the animal an imminent threat to the community and were urging any residents who spot a mountain lion in their neighborhood to stay inside and call 9-1-1.
