A Southern California water district is considering a personalized pricing plan that would allow customers who use a little water to pay less and those who use a lot to pay more.

The Ventura County Star reports board members of the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District have approved a staff study of the proposal. It will be taken up again at the next board meeting.

Under the plan, customers would be allocated an amount of water and charged based on what percentage of the allotment they use.

The personalized water budgets are part of a broad effort to reduce water use and meet a state-mandated 20 percent decrease by 2020.

The district serves 65,000 residents of Westlake Village, Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Hidden Hills and adjacent unincorporated areas in Los Angeles County.
