With super hot temps come a gaggle of air-conditioned events. Watch the Kentucky Derby from a local bar, celebrate Union Station's 75th birthday or view Mike Kelley's remarkable art. Willing to brave the outdoors? Grab a cold brew at Pasadena's sustainable beer garden before busting out binoculars for Bird L.A. Day. 

Here's everything you need to know: 


1. WATCH THE KENTUCKY DERBY

Make yourself a mighty mint julep and pick your favorite horse before heading out to a local spot for Saturday's races. CBS has a list of local venues celebrating the event, including Santa Anita Park in Arcadia. Other spots include The Churchill in West Hollywood and Los Angeles Athletic Club in downtown Los Angeles. Pro tip: California Chrome is the morning-line favorite.

2. BIRDING DAY IN LA

Angelenos are pretty psyched about birds. During the most recent nationwide Great Backyard Bird Count, no county in the country submitted more checklists than L.A. County. That's why Saturday has been dubbed Bird L.A. Day. Events include birding walks and tours hosted by the Audubon Center at Debs Park. Pro tip: Share your sightings on social media using the hashtag #BirdLADay. Here's a list of the 340 species already spotted in the city.

3. SEE MIKE KELLEY'S CRAZY, COOL ART

Mike Kelley is widely regarded as one of the most influential artists of our time; he worked in every conceivable medium, including paper, sculpture, performance, music, video, photography and painting. See 250 pieces from Kelley's innovative body of dark and delirious work now at MOCA. Pro tip: At 11:30 a.m. Saturday, there will be a symposium exploring Kelley's influence in L.A. but space is limited. 

When: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday; 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday

4. TACOS AND BEER 5K FESTIVAL

There's a delicious incentive at the end of this 5k: tasty tacos and cold beer. Sign up by Friday or stop by to cheer on runners. There will also be mariachi music and a costume party to kick start Cinco De Mayo.

When: 9 a.m. Saturday

5. NATIONAL TRAIN DAY: UNION STATION TURNS 75

Los Angeles Union Station 75th Anniversary

Celebrate 75 years of the iconic Historic Union Station in the heart of Los Angeles. Catch the rededication ceremony at 10 a.m. and stick around for a day filled with architectural tours, model train displays and more. Take a snapshot of historic cars like the Patrón Tequila Express and the Acoma while listening to live mariachi music. Here's a list of entertainers. 

When: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday

6. PASADENA EARTH & ARTS FESTIVAL 

Celebrate earth and the arts in Old Town Pasadena. Partake in art workshops and have a drink at the Sustainable Beer Garden. Be sure to catch live performances from Highland Park band Artichoke and San Gabriel's Ballet Folklorico Sol y Luna. Pro tip: Sandra Tsing Loh from KPCC's the Loh Down on Science will be there, too. Get a free tote bag if you go Metro.

7. CALIFORNIA BOOKSTORE DAY

Get lost inside the pages of a good book during the first statewide bookstore party. The event will be recognized at more than 90 bookstores in California. Bookstores like Vroman's and DIESEL, A Bookstore will be participating. For the full list of bookstores holding events, click here. Expect a sampling of special books and literary art. Think Record Store Day, but for book nerds.

8. BROCCOLI CITY FESTIVAL

Time to eat those veggies and give broccoli another chance. Celebrate healthy living during one of the biggest fitness and sustainability festivals in L.A. Get ready for interactive pop-up exhibits, as well as yoga and fitness lessons. There are also a ton of performances planned.

9. MOVIE NIGHT WITH HELIX COLLECTIVE

Spend your Saturday evening at Silverlake Lounge's Movie Night for a super cool multi-media experience. Produced by Helix Collective, the event will feature newly composed film scores performed live alongside the projection of six short films.
