Some Los Angeles streets will be closed Wednesday for a public funeral service for Los Angeles Police Department officer Roberto Sanchez, who was killed in a hit-and-run accident while pursuing a car in Harbor City. His partner was hospitalized with a broken jaw and has since been released.
The fatal accident happened May 3 at Anaheim Street and President Avenue when the officers’ patrol car executed a U-turn to pursue a suspect and a Chevy Tahoe struck the car.
The alleged driver of the Tahoe, 20-year-old Los Angeles man Mynor Varela, has since been arrested and charged with murder. He plead not guilty May 7.
Wednesday’s funeral service will begin at 9 a.m. at Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels at 555 West Temple Street in Los Angeles. Interment will follow at Good Shepherd Cemetery in Huntington Beach at 8301 Talbert Avenue.
The following street closures will be in effect Wednesday by 6 a.m.:
- Hill Street between Ord and 1st Street
- Temple Street between Grand Avenue and Alameda
- Northbound Grand Avenue between 1st Street and Temple Street
Services are open to everyone but there will likely not be enough seating inside and outside the Cathedral, LAPD advised in a statement.
