The World Cup starts Thursday, and here at KPCC, we'll be touring Los Angeles' diverse neighborhoods through the lens of the soccer tournament. Starting with L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti, who says the World Cup "represents who we are."

VIDEO: Mayor Eric Garcetti talks World Cup

Garcetti is excited about the World Cup — and so are you, our listeners. In preparation for this week's games, we spoke with some of you to ask who you'll be cheering for. We hope you'll share your plans and hopes for the World Cup, too! (More on that in a bit.)

Angeleno Enrique Elpern is a fan of Brazil, Uruguay and the U.S.

"I am Brazilian and my father is from Uruguay. I now live in the United States, so I care for all three teams," he told us via our Public Insight Network.

Elpern refers to the World Cup as "a tournament of dreams."

"There is not a single sporting event in the world that is more exciting and thrilling than the World Cup," he wrote. "I am highly passionate about the World Cup and can't wait to watch the games."

Juan Vargas is a fan of Mexico for sentimental reasons, he said.

"My father and I have a tradition of watching international football since I've been a little boy," he wrote.

But Mexico isn't the only team he'll be rooting for. Vargas is also supporting the U.S. and Netherlands. Why Netherlands? "Because I enjoy their style of play and orange kits," he told us.
