A student is suing a Southern California college district over rules he claims violate his right of free expression.

The Los Angeles Times  says Vincenzo Sinapi-Riddle filed the federal suit Tuesday against Citrus Community College District in Glendora.

The student says he was warned he would be thrown off the Citrus College campus last fall for violating rules that limit petitioning, pamphleting and similar activities to a "free speech area" on campus. He was gathering signatures against government spying.

A call seeking comment from a college spokeswoman wasn't immediately returned.

The lawsuit is one of four coordinated by a Philadelphia-based group, the Foundation of Individual Rights in Education.

Students on Tuesday also filed free-expression suits against Iowa State University, Ohio University and Chicago State University.
