California’s U.S. senators announced in a joint statement Thursday that they are endorsing state Attorney General Kamala Harris in the race to replace U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer.
“I hope Californians will join with me in supporting Kamala Harris for the U.S. Senate seat I have been proud to hold for 24 years,” Boxer said in the statement. Sen. Dianne Feinstein added that she looks "forward to having a strong partner in Kamala Harris serving alongside me in the U.S. Senate.”
Harris, a Democrat, is running against Democratic U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez of Orange County. Harris has been the party’s favorite since she announced her candidacy and she has consistently led Sanchez in polls leading up to the Nov. 8 election.
The endorsements were announced the morning after the two candidates squared off in a debate at California State University, Los Angeles, Wednesday night.
Boxer said the following in her endorsement:
“I said at the start of the race between Attorney General Kamala Harris and Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez that they were both my friends and supporters. Therefore, I have stayed neutral. However, I also said that if differences developed that indicate that one candidate emerges as the progressive choice that I would endorse the individual. That day has come.
“California deserves a continuation of clear progressive leadership in the U.S. Senate. For almost 50 years, the seat that I hold has been a leadership seat on human rights, women’s rights, civil rights, voting rights, immigrants’ rights, fair trade, a clean environment and a voice for all families - no matter their circumstances. Kamala Harris shares those values with me. Her broad array of endorsements underscores this.
“I hope Californians will, after electing me four times to the U.S. Senate, join with me on November 8 in supporting California Attorney General Kamala Harris for the U.S. Senate seat I have been proud to hold for 24 years.”
Feinstein said the following in her statement:
“As San Francisco District Attorney, Kamala was one of the first prosecutors in the nation to push a series of reforms to make our criminal justice system smarter, fairer and more efficient. As Attorney General, she won justice and relief for homeowners who were wronged during the mortgage crisis, strengthened California gun laws and prosecuted polluters.
“In this U.S. Senate campaign, Kamala has been a consistent voice of unity and optimism at a time when too many political leaders have tried to divide our communities along racial and religious lines. I wholeheartedly endorse Kamala's campaign and look forward to having a strong partner in Kamala Harris serving alongside me in the U.S. Senate.”
A response from Harris was included with the endorsements.
“I'm so honored to have the endorsement of these California giants,” Harris said. “Barbara and Dianne have been incredible champions for the people of our state, and I look forward to continuing our work together in the weeks, months and years ahead.”
