Los Angeles police fatally shot a man who the department said was a suspect fleeing an area where patrol officers had heard gunfire.

The shooting happened just after midnight near 1st and Soto streets in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of east Los Angeles.

The officers were on patrol when they went toward an area where they heard gunshots.

They saw a man running from 1st Street and Breed Street and tried to stop him. No others details on what led to the officer-involved shooting where provided.

The fire department arrived and pronounced the man dead. Officers found a gun.

The shooting occurred near the Soto Gold Line station. Trains skipped the stop while LAPD conducted an investigation overnight. The station reopened at 10:30 Saturday morning.
