The heat wave is over. Get out this weekend and see charros at the Mexican Independence Day parade or Tahitian performers at a Polynesian dance competition. Bring your pet to Woofstock or your kid to the Autry. All of that and more is happening this weekend.

WHERE: Cesar Chavez Ave., East L.A. MAP

Join an expected 20,000 people attending this weekend's annual celebration of Mexican culture. The parade of horseback riders, dancers, and floats travels down Cesar Chavez Avenue starting at 10 a.m. It culminates in a street festival, where visitors can enjoy Mexican food and mariachi and banda music.


STAYCATION PICK

Weekend in Polynesia

WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 9 - Sunday, Sept. 10, 9 a.m to 9 p.m.
WHERE: Long Beach Recreational Park MAP
COST: Free

You can take a Polynesian getaway this weekend without leaving SoCal. This annual festival celebrates the culture of the Pacific Islands with an all-day Tahitian dance competition, featuring some incredibly trained dancers with fast-moving hips. You can also sample some traditional food, shop the crafts and finish the weekend with some spectating at the Samoan fire knife competition. 


MUSIC PICK

Beat Swap Meet

WHEN: Sunday, Sept 10, 12 p.m - 6 p.m.
WHERE: Grand Park, Downtown L.A. MAP
COST: Free

Calling all vinyl lovers! Beat Swap Meet is bringing together artists and record shops to celebrate the timeless tradition of music collecting, particularly its influence on hip hop. There will be live performances, vendors, a dance floor and of course, plenty of places to peruse the stacks and add to your vinyl collection. Whether you're new to record collecting or you're a veteran of crate digging, this swap meet is worth checking out.

The Autry is hosting their own take on the classic pinewood derby. Kids can create their own race car out of Legos and race their creations on a downhill track. There's even the fun-sized (and by fun-sized, we mean gigantic) DUPLO blocks for kids under the age of 3. While you're there, check out the museum's "Play!" exhibit about toys across history. Another fun family pick for the weekend is the annual Chalk Art Festival on the Pier in Redondo Beach.

Fireworks Finale: The Muppets Take the Bowl

WHERE: Hollywood Bowl MAP

The ragtag team of Muppets are bringing both classic and new sketches to the Hollywood Bowl all weekend. The performance is accompanied by a live orchestra and some surprise celebrity guests are expected to make an appearance. The night ends in some spectacular fireworks over the iconic L.A. amphitheater.


FUR-FRIENDLY PICK

Pamper your pet at this fur-friendly event on the Third Street Promenade. The grooming team from Healthy Spot will provide complimentary "pawdicures" and airbrush tattoos (to humans). The top dogs can also show off at the costume competition or trick competition, and maybe even win a free doggie T-shirt.


OUTDOOR PICK

Los Angeles River Boat Race

WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 9th, 10:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.
WHERE: Glendale Narrows MAP
COST: Free

Get outside and enjoy a day by the river (yes, L.A. has a river!) at the Los Angeles River Boat Race. Paddlers of all types, including stand-up paddleboarders and kayakers, will race in several different events. You can even rent a kayak there to give the Original "Fun" Course a try. Don't worry, newbies are welcome. Spectators can also check out the Boat Pageant and Parade starting at 10:45 a.m.
