Occidental College in Eagle Rock has announced it will offer a scholarship named after President Obama.

Starting next fall, the Barack Obama Scholars Program will provide four-year scholarships to veterans, community college transfers and first-generation college students.

"This is huge for us because to get his endorsement and his support already sets us on our way," College president Jonathan Veitch told KPCC.

The program has received an official endorsement from President Obama himself.

"This scholarship is more than tuition, room and board," Veitch said. "It covers access to our United Nations Program as well as undergraduate research, paid internships, and a post-graduate scholarship that allows students to kind of explore careers in public service that may not be as lucrative."

Obama attended Occidental from 1979 to 1981 before transferring to Columbia University in New York.
