On Tuesday, Police Commission President John Mack announced the three finalists to replace Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton. The finalists are Assistant Chief Jim McDonnell, Deputy Chief Charles Beck and Deputy Chief Michel Moore, all from within the department. Deputy Chief Michael Downing was named the Los Angeles Police Department's interim chief.

This morning NASA fired off the Ares I-X, an unmanned test of the first stage of its first new manned spacecraft since 1981. After the space shuttle disasters, NASA hopes this will be the safest craft they've ever built. But the new tall, spindly rocket is already mired in controversy--with critics saying it would be cheaper to repurpose existing launch vehicles.

Conceived by radio host Tavis Smiley, “America I AM: The African American Imprint” is a sweeping presentation of nearly 500 years of African American contributions to this nation’s history. Larry talks with Tavis about the traveling exhibit, which arrives in L.A. this week at the California Science Center.

In the 1970s, a young William Bratton was making his way through the Boston police, rapidly reaching the rank of lieutenant and then becoming the youngest-ever Executive Superintendent, that department's second highest post. From there he moved on to head up New York's Police Department, before coming to Los Angeles in 2002 to head up the LAPD. This is his last week in LA. He will soon move back to New York City to take a position with the private international security firm Altegrity, where he'll head up a new division that will consult on security for police departments worldwide.

Do you fight crime by leaving some gangs alone? That's one of the arguments put forth by Mark Kleiman, author of "When Brute Force Fails." In the book, the UCLA public policy professor argues that police forces get better results by focusing most energy on the most prolific criminal gangs, and punishing them swiftly, to motivate other potential criminals to stay inactive. Is this the solution?

What happened to Chief Bratton just now (10:40)? I listened to the first 20 minutes of Air Talk about possible successors, then took a brief shower, expecting to hear the promised half hour with Bratton. But when I got out, Tavis Smiley was just starting.

Renewable Energy: No one is talking about the gorilla in the room.

Electric utility companies are very powerful, simple, and well established supply monopolies bent upon maintaining themselves. They are primarily quasi government controlled, if not outright government entities. They currently have near total and exclusive control over all of the electricity supplied.

Most current new proposed renewable energy supplies threaten the existing electric utility companies’ current, iron grip, supply monopolies. LA DWP, for example is doing much to thwart bringing new renewable energy supplies online, except those new renewable energy supplies that they, LA DWP, build, own, and control. Their primary goal is to preserve their monopoly power.

Unless this gorilla is exposed, and talked about in the media, the favorable sentiments and will of the public, scientists, naturalists, politicians, ... regarding alternative or renewable energy will continue to pale in comparison to the power, influence, and determination of the entrenched electric utility companies’ to preserve their current monopoly control over almost all of the electricity supplied.

We the people, through our government entities created and have maintained the current electric utility companies’ monopoly control over almost all of the electricity supplied. Now we must effect drastic changes to those monopolies in order to obtain the alternative or renewable energy that we need so desperately. We can’t do that unless and until the media addresses the gorilla…

The Emperor truly is not wearing any clothes.

I found it curious to hear GOP Congressman Shattuck suggest that a family, as our foundation business entity, should have the same tax deduction for medical insurance premiums as our non-family business entities enjoy.
It was none other than Pres Ronald Reagan who removed that deduction from individuals and families in his Tax "Reform" of 1986.
Perhaps the Congressman would then be willing to completely repeal that and other family budget killing changes in that Federal law and Reagan's follow up tax "reforms" in 1987?? Maybe then, the American Family could eventually regain Middle Class status...
