Robert Putnam
Esteemed political scientist Robert Putnam, author of the best-selling Bowling Alone, joins Larry Mantle to talk about his new book, Democracies in Flux. In it, leading scholars reveal that participation in unions, churches and political parties is declining all over the world. What does this mean for the future of democracy?

Simon Winchester and his Best-Selling Book, The Map That Changed the World
Larry Mantle talks with best-selling author and journalist Simon Winchester about his book that chronicles the finding of the first geological map of anywhere in the world. This map was of a hidden world lying beneath the surface of Britain that contained the rock strata, fossils and minerals. The finding of the map eventually led to an entire new science known as geology. Simon Winchester is the author of The Map That Changed The World: William Smith and the Birth of Modern Geology (Perennial-and imprint of HarperCollins), and previous author of The Professor and the Madman, and journalist who has written for many publications including the New York Times, HarperÆs, The Atlantic Monthly, The Spectator, among others.

Larry Mantle and guests talk about the history of Catalina Island, including a look at the reign of the Wrigleys and the advent of the Catalina Island Conservancy. Historian Matt Garcia joins Larry Mantle to talk about his new book, A World of Its Own: Race, Labor and Citrus in the Making of Los Angeles, 1900-1970 (University of North Carolina Press), which tells how Mexican and Asian citrus laborers helped make Los Angeles the expansive, diverse, culturally rich metropolis it is today.

Larry Mantle with critics Jean Oppenheimer of Screen International, Andy Klein of New Times L.A., and Charles Solomon, animation critic of amazon.com discuss this week's new film releases, including S1m0ne, One Hour Photo, Little Secrets, Serving Sara, Undisputed, The Chateau, Lan Yu, and Mostly Martha.
