Larry Mantle explores a corruption scandal in Bakersfield that involves prominent men who preyed on teen-age boys for decades, the conspiracy to cover up their secret lives and the death of a man that gave new life to the rumors that a group of powerful gay men called ‰ÞÏThe Lords of Bakersfield‰Þð really existed. Larry talks with Robert Price, columnist for The Bakersfield Californian. He and Managing Editor Lois Henry researched the story for three months, interviewing over 100 people and digesting thousands of pages of court documents, investigative reports and newspaper articles to produce a six parts Special Report for the Californian detailing the activities of these men since the late 1970s.

Koreatown Community Forum: Crisis on the Korean Peninsula (Listen)
The relationship between the United States and North Korea is in crisis. Everyday the gap between the two countries widens as North Korea escalates tensions through a series of provocative acts and proclamations. In the first hour of our community forum, Larry Mantle and a panel of experts explore the current crisis, examining its historical context, the role of president Bush in this present conflict, and solutions to the stand-off in relations between the US and North Korea. They will also discuss how the southern California Korean-American community is responding to the crisis in US-N. Korea relations. Joining host Larry Mantle are Kyeyoung Park, Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology, University of California, Los Angeles; Kyung Moon Hwang, Assistant Professor of History, University of Southern California; Benjamin ‰ÞÏBen‰Þð Min, retired Professor of History, State University of New York, Buffalo, and Edward Chang, Associate Professor of Ethnic Studies, University of California, Riverside.

The Korean American Experience in Southern California (Listen)

According to USC Psychologist Adrian Raine, these people may not be just eccentric, they may have a brain disorder. Larry also talks with Raine about his research into the brains of violent individuals.

The Effects Of Television Violence On Childhood Development (Listen)
How does television violence affect kids? Does it make them more aggressive, more verbally abusive, and less sympathetic to the pain of others? Psychologist L. Rowell Huesmann and several colleagues conducted a fifteen-year longitudinal study of the effects of television violence on 329 children. Their study is published in the March issue of Developmental Psychology. Huesmann and his colleagues made many findings, including the conclusion that violence on television is linked to later aggression in young adults, both male and female. University of Michigan Psychologist and study author L. Rowell Huesmann joins host Larry Mantle to discuss the issue. Also joining Larry is Dale Kunkel, professor of communication at UC Santa Barbara. Professor Kunkel studies the type, and amount, of violence seen on television.
