Orange County Toll Road Decision

The California Coastal Commission has rejected a proposal to extend an Orange County toll road through San Onofre State Beach Park. The Coastal Commission sided with environmentalists and surfers. They had complained that the extension would destroy a large area of environmentally sensitive habitat and wetlands, and spoil a popular surf spot. The Coastal Commission found that the toll road extension was inconsistent with state law. Toll road officials said they will file an appeal next week with the U.S. Secretary of Commerce to keep the $875 million project alive. Environmental Groups Threaten Port Of Long Beach With Federal Lawsuit

Two environmental groups have announced plans to sue the Port of Long Beach over diesel pollution. The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and the Coalition For a Safe Environment (CFASE) sent a letter to the Port of Long Beach Wednesday. The letter gives the port 90 days to begin reducing diesel pollution emitted within its boundaries, or face a federal lawsuit. Larry talks with David Pettit, senior attorney with the Natural Resources Defense Council and director of NRDC's Southern California Air Program, and Mario Cordero, President of the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners.
Economic Stimulus Package

A 168-billion-dollar economic stimulus package has been sent to President Bush by Congress. The House voted to expand the list of rebate check recipients so that 20 million seniors and a quarter million disabled veterans get checks worth 300 dollars. Larry talks about the package with Jack Shaw, Capitol Hill reporter with Market News International.
