On Sunday, California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill requiring health insurance companies to treat autism as a disease and pay for treatment. The bill will take effect starting in July 2012. Before the law, insurers could deny coverage because treatment was classified as an education service. Gov. Brown signed the law despite concerns about the bill's cost. The law is scheduled to end on July 1, 2014, when the federal Affordable Care law begins.
Occupy LA protesters remain camped out on the lawn at city hall. The demonstrators are acting in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street movement and are planning to broaden their protest this Saturday with an event they are calling the “International Day of Action.”
