Thieves absconded with $3 million in gold nuggets this week that were on display in a Yreka, Calif. court house.
Rico Gagliano and Brendan Francis Newnam join us with talking points for your next dinner party -- or for Super Bowl Sunday, which they point out is the second biggest eating day in America after Thanksgiving.
Their topics include:
- The Army's new plan for shrinking the waistlines of its ranks – research is underway on fat that could be transplanted into soldiers to help them lose weight. What happened to good old fashioned exercise?
- A strange Cold War-era military operation called "Operation Looking Glass" that involves "doomsday planes" and pilots wearing eye patches.
- And, lesson learned: don't leave your gold nuggets lying around! In Yreka, Calif., thieves broke into the courthouse in the middle of the night and stole some pricey historical artifacts, $3 million in gold nuggets.
The Dinner Party airs Sundays on KPCC at 3 p.m.
