Today is Charles Dickens' 200th birthday. Celebrations have begun around the globe with an international read-a-thon from Australia to Zimbabwe.

Google has memorialized the author with a Google doodle of some of his famous characters.

And in Dickens' home country of England, Prince Charles and his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall joined actor Ralph Fiennes at Westminster Abbey for a memorial service.

David Kipen explains why we should celebrate Dickens every day. He is the founder of Libros Schmibros, a lending library and used bookstore in Boyle Heights.
