One of the most highly anticipated beers in the country hits L.A. this week – Pliny the Younger from Russian River Brewery in Santa Rosa, Calif.
The unparalleled "triple IPA" and nephew of Russian River's iconic "double IPA" Pliny the Elder, this ale inspires rabid devotion from beer nerds across the country. It has been described by some as "the Hope Diamond of beers," and even "the Star Wars of beers," owing to the massive lines of people who queue up for its annual release.
Taking a day off from work to attend a release is not unheard of for followers of "Younger," whose fans have propelled it into a rare echelon of craft beer excellence. It is one of a handful of beers to achieve a perfect 100-point score on the industry standard review site Beer Advocate.
But with all the hype surrounding its release, getting your hands on one may be tricky. It is released only in small batches for two weeks a year and distributed to a select few bars in California chosen by Russian River brewmaster Vinnie Cilurzo. Luckily enough, some of those bars can be found here in L.A.
Lucky Baldwin’s in Pasadena will be serving the prestigious brew on March 6, and 38 Degrees Ale House in Alhambra will be serving "Younger" this Saturday.
