Two weeks ago, Iraqi-American woman Shaima Alawadi, was brutally beaten to death in her El Cajon home. Family members told reporters a threatening note was left at the crime scene — telling Alawadi "go back to your country, you terrorist."

Police stated they were looking at the possibility of a hate crime, which prompted observers to draw parallels between the beating of Alawadi and the shooting of Trayvon Martin in Florida. But the killing of Alawadi may not be what it seems. Court documents obtained by the San Diego Union Tribune are casting doubt on the family's version of events.
