The graphic novelist Alison Bechdel uses simple, clean drawings to tell difficult and often messy stories.

She's just come out with a follow up to her 2006 memoir "Fun Home." That book told the story of her childhood in rural Pennsylvania growing up with a closeted homosexual father who died of an apparent suicide. "Fun Home" was a critical smash, a New York Times Best Seller and Time Magazine's Book of the Year.

Her new graphic novel is called "Are You my Mother?" This time, Bechdel delves into her relationship with her mom, herself an artist who gave up her career to raise a family.

Bechdel will be reading at the Los Angeles Public Library tonight at 7:00 p.m.
