While medical marijuana dispensaries in L.A. could be shutting down, licensed patients will still be allowed to grow and share marijuana in groups of three. However, it’s not as easy as it sounds.

Opponents of the ban argue that growing their own pot will be too costly and too difficult which would put the medicine out of reach for many.

David, a former collective owner and pot grower from San Diego, says that growing marijuana is a lot harder and much more expensive than many people realize. David requested that we only use his first name for this story.

"I mean bare minimum you're gonna look at $1,500 for the initial setup. And then for maintenance of it, replenishing all the nutrients and paying for electricity as well, at least $200-400 per month, depending on where you live and the prices for those things there," he said.

David says there is a laundry list of things one needs in order to even begin growing. The list includes such things as finding good seeds, lights, hydroponic equipment, a private area and a strong background knowledge of how to grow plants.

There are risks inherent in taking the plant growing outside, according to Daniel, not least of which is suspicious neighbors and police. Pests and animals are attracted to pot plants, so protecting crops from an infestation would add to the overall cost of growing.

The mayor has 10 days to sign off on the ban which will take effect 30 days after the ordinance is signed.
