Ecstasy, In and About Altered States

Ecstasy, In and About Altered States is a very talked about exhibition at the Museum Contemporary Art's Geffen Contemporary in downtown LA's Little Tokyo. MOCA'S chief curator Paul Schimmel takes Ben Adair on a guided tour. Ecstasy ends on February 20th 2006.

Psilocybin study of stage 4 cancer patients

Harbor-UCLA Medical Center has a pilot study underway that tests the efficacy of psilocybin, an active ingredient in "magic mushrooms," to treat anxiety in stage 4 cancer patients. This is the question: Can an intense psychedelic medicine help cancer victims come to terms with their upcoming deaths?

Sacred Spaces: Historic Houses of Worship in the City of Angeles

A photographer named Robert Berger has been on the search for sacred spaces. Robert is an architectural photographer, which means he spends most his time taking pictures of hotels and restaurants, but Robert is also in love with Los Angeles. He has self-published two amazing books focusing on Los Angeles, a show of his work at the Skirball Cultural Center focuses on his latest book. Mikveh

Ayala Ben-Yehuda takes us to the Rabbinical Assembly Mikveh in the University of Judaism in West LA. A mikveh is where Jewish women go for sacred cleansing rituals, most commonly before a wedding. Ayala BenYehuda went, a bit belatedly, in recognition of Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year.

Botanica El Congo Manuel

Charles Gaulperin is a Santeria priest and the owner of Botanica El Congo Manuel. The shop sells religious items and is located in a strip mall on Santa Monica Blvd. in Hollywood.

It's the kind of place Angeleonos drive by a million times and never notice. Queena Kim goes to the Botanica to witness a sacred ceremony that involves the sacrifice of a hen and a sick man in New York.
