Facebook, twitter, SMS and YouTube have become vital ways for Iranians to inform the world about protests and violence. How have you been getting news and information from Iran? A troubling new study sponsored by the FDA raises some questions about the health risks of having ADHD - not of treating the condition, but the condition itself. Should we worry? And the never-ending fight over greenhouse gas controls heated up after UN meetings in Germany last week. Developed nations are saying, don’t make the mistakes we made. But the emerging nations are saying, you can’t deny us our right to prosper, even if it means polluting. Who's right?
And the parade may be over, but Patt never tires of putting on her purple and gold hat to talk Lakers.
Phone lines, text-messaging, and social networking sites are being shut down in Iran. Patt talks with people that have recently moved to the U.S. from Iran about what is really happening with the communication in Iran and gets their personal takes on recent events surrounding the Iranian elections.
A new study sponsored by the FDA and the National Institute of Mental Health shows a possible connection between the medications regularly prescribed to treat Attention Deficit & Hyperactivity Disorder and sudden heart attacks among children. Parent’s first reaction might be to freak out, but the study’s findings are much more complicated—how should we interpret the health risks of ADHD medications and the ADHD condition itself?
After two weeks of UN meetings on climate change in Bonn, Germany and the President’s global warming envoy laying groundwork in Beijing, progress may be possible. Even though China remains steadfast in the belief that the bulk of the responsibility of global warming lies in the hands of the richer nations, both sides released positive remarks and it seems that an agreement could indeed be in the cards.
Nobody says- I want to be a plumber when I grow up, but maybe they should. Patt talks with Matthew Crawford author of “Shop Class as Soulcraft” about the value of physical labor in a society that often reserves its respect for those it considers intellectuals.
Days after the Lakers won their 15th championship the party is still going strong. The festivities culminated at the Los Angeles Coliseum after an hour long parade that wound through downtown and drew tens of thousands of people. We talk about the momentous celebration of the team that many are calling “The Heart of our City.”

I am an Iranian who migrated here in 1999, when I was 17. I have voted in every single election since I turned 18, utilizing the polling places that were available in the US, and I've always been criticized by anti-Iranian-regimists, who insinuated that by participating in the elections, I'm supporting the government of Iran. And I wanted to comment to all those who think like that, that had people boycotted the elections, Ahmadinejad would've won faire and square, and no one would've seen the clear dictatorship and corruption within the system.

I find it disturbing that soo many children are just merely given drugs instead of just finding alternative teaching methods. None of our parents were on these drugs and they turned out find. In middle school during the 90's it was just disturbing to see all the kids line up at lunch time to take these drugs. Sometimes the easiest solution isn't the best, what are the other alternatives to drugs?

Capitalism, especially the law of supply and demand is what drives the value of jobs. I'm not sure it is related to whether or not it "dirty" or not. There are plenty of dirty jobs that pay higher than office jobs.

Interesting points on manual labor, but I notice that the speaker's job is actually that of professor and only secondarily that of a tradesman. Hypocrisy?

Is this really being discussed? He can't answer the question Why? It's the same answer you're in radio. People want fame and money.. People want to be famous for being famous. Look at what we watch on TV. People don't want to work hard.
As long as Hannah Montana is on TV, kids won't want to be anything else but famous.

Regarding manual labor: 25 years ago, before the massive influx of illegal immigrants, the average high school graduate could support a family by working construction. Illegal immigration has now driven down wages - as well as prestige for any type of manual labor.

This is not about today's program, but a question i have been wondering about since the entire budget fiasco began. How many items are listed on the California State Budget? If every line with NO expections was reduced by say 1% or 2% of their request, what would the total savinds be? It would be intersting to see if this alone would not greatly reduce the definite with everyone having the same economic hit.

The dialogue about educational choices for our youth is great. I believe that the educational system should be grounded in a k-12 career development emphasis where young people are encouraged and supported in career exploration from the outset. Children, and parents, are expected to make curriculum choices beginning in middle school that have HUGE implications for the child's career exploration and growth. Whether the student tends toward vocational education or intellectual enrichment, they must be guided through the approriate career/developmental experiences in order to make good decisions about the type of people that they want to become.
This neglected aspect of preparing young people for adult life must be attended too.

I presently co-manage an operating room pharmacy [at my hospital of employment] and have noticed a nearly tangible disparity in how people that work with their hands are treated by those who do not. Being an African-American male - to the extent that I perceive the world via this particular "filter" - I have developed a heightened sense of bias-awareness when other African-Americans are involved. This hypersensitivity, however, feeds more into a sense of intractable misomophyly than sympathy [or empathy]. It's a near impossible task to eschew having the perceptions of troglodytic individuals who view "low-to-the-floor" laborers as less than erudite thrust upon me. Regrettably, I don't believe that the negative perceptions of manual laborers [within my hospital or elsewhere] will be altered unless such occurs on a societal level.
