Richard Miller - Breakthrough Photographer

Richard Miller, a pioneer in photographic methods, often used the cabro printing process, a technically detailed and challenging method of production, in his amazing photography, which includes early pictures of Marilyn Monroe and James Dean. In contrast, he used black and white film to document the building of the Hollywood freeway, photographs he made just for himself that are published for the first time in his new book, Freeway.

Richard Miller is one of the really great photographers of his generation. He is also one of the finest human beings you will find on the face of this earth. He is at the very top of my list of friends for his caring and compassionate approach to his photography, his friends, and to life. God has given him an extra extension on his life's journey and at the age of 97 he is now back in New York with his lovely daughter Jan and still reaching out to the world of photography with his incredible images ...

To put things in perspective, Richard Miller was producing color photographs by the carbro process before color film was commercially available. In a few decades from now, when most color photographs will have faded to the point of being almost useless, his pigment prints will still exist in nearly their original splendor. Anyone who can visit the exhibit at the Getty Museum should do so to see his original prints currently on display. It may be quite a while before such an impressive exhibit of Miller's color prints sees daylight again.

Hi Pat
Many thanks for the lovely afternoon. I know Dick listens to the interview and chuckles all over again. He had a great time and it was one of the highlights of his trip back to California. For those who want to see images we have created his website at www.RichardCMiller.com.
Also, Dick will have an exhibit at the Craig Krull Gellery early next year of his B&W freeway pictures and some of the color work.
thanks again
