Clifton’s – Is California’s Favorite Kitschy Cafeteria Closing Down?
LA Times
The Clinton family, proprietors of downtown mainstay Clifton’s Cafeteria, is selling the building that has housed the iconic eatery since it first opened its doors in 1935. Despite assurances from the Clinton family that Clifton’s will not close down, rumors that the restaurant is on death’s door persist. If the downtown Mecca of kitsch closes what does that mean for downtown Los Angeles?

I was driving so couldn't respond at the time. My parents came from New England through New York (World's Fair & automats) for three months in late 1940 and settled in Venice. I was ten when we went to Clifton's and got a big kick with all the gimmicks. I seem to remember fake parrots. We also went to Taix a number of times, but when the war hit it took too much gas so we became regulars at King's Hawaiian Gardens in Culver City and Stern's Barbeque in Mar Viista, both great places. At seventy-nine I still remember the wonderful chicken and corn bread with butter and honey at Kings and the unbelievable barbeque sauce at Sterns. As an older adult I tried to make the trip to Sterns from Rancho Palos Verdes just for that. I wish I could have gotten the recipe before they closed.
