California students score “F” in Math

It may be raining outside, but it’s also a gloomy day in California classrooms. The 2009 Nation's Report Card was released this morning and California earned a big fat “F” in Math and only barely missed setting the curve thanks to Mississippi and Alabama, who came in just behind. What do they mean for our population and funding? We break down the scores.

English learners and low socio-economic groups expectedly score poorly relative to English speakers and higher socio-economic groups. However, that doesn’t explain how poor immigrant Asian groups score well in these tests. Is it inappropriate for NPR to discuss culture as a factor? Do poor immigrant Asian families stress the importance of school and test results/grades more than other groups?
